Recycled plastic lumber is solid profile made from post-consumer HDPE waste — bottle caps, crates, jerrycans and packaging — washed, shredded, melted and extruded into planks, posts and beams. In Tanzania it is manufactured by Green Venture Limited at a factory in the Njiro Industrial Area, Arusha, and used in place of timber for decking, cladding, subframes, walkways, fencing and furniture because it does not rot, absorb water or feed termites.

Plastic recycling in Tanzania: from waste stream to building material

Plastic recycling in Tanzania is mostly mechanical: waste is collected by informal and organised collectors, sorted by polymer, washed, shredded and re-melted into new products. Green Venture Limited operates that full chain in Arusha for high-density polyethylene (HDPE), converting more than 2,000 tonnes of post-consumer plastic into decking, cladding, lumber and furniture rather than exporting it as flake.

Timber alternatives for building in Tanzania

Timber in Tanzania fails for three predictable reasons: termites, moisture during the long rains, and UV exposure. The practical alternatives for outdoor and wet-area construction are solid recycled plastic lumber, imported composite board, pressure-treated softwood, dense hardwood and steel. Cladding wet rooms, showers and camp bathrooms

Recycled plastic cladding is a solid HDPE board used to line showers, bathrooms, outdoor bath decks and other wet areas. It absorbs no water, so it cannot swell, blacken, rot or grow the mould that destroys timber linings in safari camps and coastal hotels, and it is cleaned with soap and water rather than resealed each season.
